Cradle Cap or Seborrhoeic Eczema Can Be Treated!

With Infantile Seborrhoeic Eczema or Cradle Cap the baby’s scalp becomes dry and flaky but, the good news is, it doesn’t itch too much.

This skin disorder usually affects the scalp, face, chest or stomach. It can cause the skin to become red, scaly, flaky and crusty. It spreads quickly to behind the ears or under the arms. Don’t worry, though, it’s very common and will slowly disappear. Keeping your sweet little baby’s head moisturized with an allergy-free lotion or cream will help.

Seborrhoeic Eczema particularly affects the sebum-gland areas of the skin. This includes hair covered areas of your skin where there are hair follicles where oil builds up. It can affect adults, too, usually between the ages of 20-40 years old.

The cause of Cradle cap is possibly from the hormonal changes during pregnancy which causes a build up of oils. But, no one is exactly sure. In addition, it is thought to be caused by fungi (yeasts) which are known as the cause of dandruff. The yeast is naturally found on humans and animals.

Home Remedies That Can Help Cradle Cap:

  • Shampoo the scalp & hair with a mild baby shampoo. Yes, shampooing often IS good for it!
  • Use a soft brush regularly to help remove the scales from the flaky scalp.
  • A gentle treatment is to rub a small amount of olive oil or baby oil onto your baby’s scalp. It will soften and loosen the scales.
  • Coconut oil rubbed on the scalp is known to help get rid of the cradle cap and to prevent further outbreaks. After using the oil brush the scalp with a soft terry washcloth.
  • Frequent shampooing will help prevent the build-up of flaky scales.
  • A dab of glycerin (applied a few times a day) is also known to help the scales “slide away.”
  • A small drop of Tea Tree oil will soften the scales to help them brush off easily.
  • Vitamin E oil (squeezed from a capsule) is always a good healer. Dab it on the scalp to help loosen the scales.

Try some of the different remedies and pick the one that works best for you and your baby. Remember that everyone is different so what might work for someone else may not work for you. But, with so many solutions there is sure to be one that's just right.

Don’t worry…remember it will go away!
